As part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815 - 1830)

France took Belgium from the Austrian Hapsburgs

in 1794 and governed it until the defeat of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1813.

After the final defeat of Napoleon by the British and Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Congress of Vienna gave Belgium to the Netherlands.

The French wanted a buffer between France and the German states and the Netherlands

Catholics and speakers of French in Belgium declared independence from the Dutch-speaking Netherlands and the Dutch Protestant king in 1830.

The Belgian Congress elected the Duc de Nemours, son of Louis-Philippe, king of France, its king. But, under British pressure, he declined the offer.

In 1831 the Belgian Congress elected the German Prince Leopold of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha  (an uncle of Great Britain's Queen Victoria)

Allied forces got Leopold in Austria on May 7, 1945.

Belgians considered Leopold a Nazi collaborator so he did not return to Belgium. Instead, he moved to Switzerland, in October 1945.

In a national referendum on July 20, 1950 more than half of the Belgian public voted for Leopold's return. The Flemish vote tipped the balance. Two days later, on July 22, 1950, he arrived in Belgium.

Violent protests against Leopold, however, persuaded him, on August 1, 1950, to transfer his duties and responsibilities to his eldest son, Baudoin.
